CVCWA Advocates in Sacramento

L-R: Betsy Gerwig, Carol Chandler, Allison Orum and Eva Orum joined other CWA chapters for the Statewide Meeting and Legislative visits in Sacramento on May 5-6.

Statewide Meeting - Blythe

March 7 - Toured Diversion Dam in Blythe - water is plentiful because of the Colorado River and canals.  We saw a lot of alfafa and wheat fields.  We also were able to watch how Hay Day Farms processes and ships their hay.  The group crossed the Arizona border and also learned how the special bridge was built to haul the hay to California from Michael Mullion.  The conference was a very enlightening experience!

Statewide Meeting - Petaluma

The purpose of the meeting in Sacramento was advocacy for issues and legislation affecting agriculture.  Topping the list was a push for a water bond on the November ballot.  Opposition was expressed to legislators and staff for SB 1381 (Evans) to label genetically engineered food, leading to increased cost to consumers, unfounded fear of food products, and hampered efforts to research invasive pests and disease cures.  Also members opposed the minimum wage hike in SB 935 (Leno) that would make CA less competitive with other states and increase wages according to inflation rather than merit.

Support for an Agricultural Career Technical Education Incentive Grant and certification of all farmers markets, as well as the need for Williamson Act Subvention Payments, were part of the communication effort.

The Central Valley Chapter is participating in the Adopt-A-Legislator program to keep in touch and act as a resource on legislation.  Adopted legislators include Assembly-members Hagman (Chino Hills), Patterson (Fresno), Wieckowski (Fremont), Skinner (Oakland), Rodriguez (Chino), Conway (Tulare), Perea (Fresno) and Senator Corbett (San Leandro).  Certificates were awarded each legislator along with a packet of information and pistachios from a Central Valley farm.

A sponsored reception was held following the Capitol office visits. It was very well attended by legislators and regulators, capping a busy and fruitful series of meetings and discussions. ~ Carol Chandler
